Fall is for Planting™ is a free educational resource that helps homeowners, gardeners and landscapers understand why autumn is often the best season to plant trees, shrubs, evergreens, perennials and bulbs, and how to do it successfully.
Many people still think of spring as the only planting season. We want to change that. Plants set out in fall grow roots through the cool months and start spring stronger, and gardeners who plant in fall have more success and less loss.
Our approach
- Research-based. Our guidance follows current recommendations from land-grant universities, cooperative extension services and the International Society of Arboriculture. We cite our sources on every page.
- Practical. Clear, step-by-step instructions you can use this weekend.
- Kept up to date. Horticultural advice evolves. For example, we no longer recommend amending planting holes with peat moss, and we update pages when the science changes.
Our history
Fall is for Planting™ has been teaching gardeners about the benefits of autumn planting for years. The site was first launched with the banner below, and the brand was refreshed in 2023 with a new logo and a modern, research-based guide.
